Music Monday: Rock Weirdos

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! It's gonna get weird today as Scott takes a look at all the weirdos of music. Join in, if you're strange enough!

Screaming Lord Sutch - Live

Screaming Lord Sutch had a great sense of theater. You can see it in this video, where he comes out in a coffin, fakes getting shot, and then kills his attacker before singing his hit. Today that's commonplace but back then, who expected a short play at a rock concert? Only the weirdos, really.

It'll only get weirder, people. It'll only get weirder.

Syd Barrett - Baby Lemonade

Pink Floyd's first phase was a really weird band. Pink Floyd's second phase was just talking about how weird they had been. Pink Floyd's third phase was trying to live up to their second phase. And even though you can argue that all the members had their part to play, there's no Pink Floyd as we know it without Syd Barrett. His weird solo work is vital and important, but the weirdest part to me is that his band didn't get super-important until they had to deal with his absence. What other rock hero got more important to the group after he left?

Daniel Johnston - Honey I Sure Miss you

Daniel Johnston is one of those weirdos who became much-loved by artistic types. He's been the subject of movies, references, bands have name-checked him and he's sadly suffered from mental illness so bad that he once almost killed himself and his father. And yet, he keeps going, and keeps working, and his stuff is still pretty cool.

G. G. Allin - Sluts In The City

G. G. Allin is known more for his theatrics, and possibly for his appearance on Geraldo. But as far as punk songs go, you know, there ARE worse than this. Also please note the famous Ben Gibbard cover to prove that anything becomes wholesome with a new arrangement.

The Residents - In The Beginning

When you know you're going to a show where musicians are dressing as giant eyes with top hats, you're already comfortable with the weird. This could be why the Residents have done well for themselves over the years. They're intentionally weird, and they don't hide it. Much like The Blue Man Group or GWAR (or even Lord Sutch above!) The Residents take a decent amount of talent and make it something more. What more can you ask from a weirdo?

Let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use. Hit up Facebook and see which weirdo's vinyl we're giving away today! See you next week.
