Music Monday: Scottish Independence

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! Thursday, September 18th is the day that Scotland could begin the processing of being an independent nation. Which way will they go? Which way will the people lean? Scott’s gathered some exciting Scotland-connected bands to celebrate the eventful week to come.

God Help The Girl - Come Monday Night

God Help The Girl was born out of Belle & Sebastian, the Scottish band much loved by the hip and the cool. I don’t know their feelings on the vote, but I am so very happy they didn’t redo this song as “Come Thursday Night” with lyrics all about the referendum.

Democracy will prevail! See you after the jump?

Cocteau Twins - Lorelei

They’re not speaking any language but their own, and yet, they started out in Scotland. The magical, lilting voice of Ms. Frazier led alternative music down a magical and different path back in the 1980s. Will she vote to see Scotland down a different path as well? Who knows? It’s a secret ballot, after all.

Aztec Camera - Jump

Scotland and America have ties far beyond music. We also share a love of fried candy bars and alcohol! If Scotland becomes independent, might they turn to the U.S. for aid and friendship? Or will they just open a James Bond theme park and watch the money roll in?

Sheena Easton - You Could Have Been With Me

She appeared on one of the very first reality shows, before those even existed. She had a little block of gold records. She sang the theme to a Bond movie. She even played the love interest on Miami Vice! Today, Sheena Easton lives quietly with her kids in Nevada, reportedly. Does she plan to vote on the referendum? Or maybe she’s happy being an American now? If you’re Sheena Easton, feel free to answer our questions in the comments.

Bay City Rollers - I Only Wanna Be With You or Bay City Rollers - Bye Bye Baby

A never-before-attempted 50/50 split for our last song! By Friday morning, we’ll know once and for all if the voters of Scotland choose the yay or the nay. Good luck to both sides. Hope Democracy finds the greatest outcome!
