Music Monday: Songs Of Madness

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! Spring has always brought with it a sort of insanity, so today Scott's chosen to collect five songs of madness. Join him in the crazed bacchanalia that is this week's Music Monday! IEEEEEE!

David Bowie - All The Madmen

So clearly this is David Bowie playing Syd Barrett, yeah? This skewed look at madness comes from a guy who had his own issues with being homo-superior over the years, so it carries a hint of authenticity. Also it's great.

It only gets nuttier from here, everyone! See you down the rabbit hole after the jump...

King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man

There's that odd place that few bands occupy, and in that place rules King Crimson. This song feels like classic rock but also crawls into experimental jazz. The first time you hear it on the radio, you feel like something's gone crazy! Appropriate, no?

Alice Cooper - Ballad Of Dwight Fry

Sadly, madness is often made worse by people expecting you to be mad. There's an old story about a psychiatrist who went undercover in a mental hospital. The staff called him delusional, the patients knew right away that he didn't belong. This Alice Cooper song is kinda about those labels. And, you know, kinda not at the same time.

Cypress Hill - Insane In The Brain

But madness isn't always something to be scared about! Sometimes it's good to be mad. Sometimes it'll give you a tactical advantage over your enemies if they simply can't predict what you'll do. How many times have you cross the street to avoid someone who is clearly out of his gourd? What if they were just doing that so they didn't have to deal with you?

Madness - Nutty Theme

Madness is ultimately up to the individual, especially in music. And you know what they say. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use. Feel free to post your favorite songs about madness in the comments below! See you next week.
